A 21-year-old man was remanded in custody today charged in relation to an alleged assault on a 16-year-old schoolboy in Drogheda, Co Louth on Wednesday.
Jamie Gallagher, of Cerney, Sheephouse, Drogheda but who is also of no fixed abode, was charged with the alleged assault on the teenager causing him harm, and producing a large silver knife while committing the alleged assault.
Detective Garda Ronan McMorrow gave evidence of arresting the accused on the Chord Road, Drogheda on Wednesday afternoon.
When he was charged with the alleged offences, Gallagher made no reply, Drogheda district court was told.
Gardaí objected to bail being granted on a number of grounds, and for part of the bail application by the accused, the press were asked to leave the court.
When the press were allowed back, the court heard that amongst the reasons for the gardaí objecting to bail was the grave seriousness of the alleged offences, the strength of the evidence, and it is alleged a knife was used in a totally unprovoked attack.
They also said certain admissions had been made and the incident had been captured on the Garda CCTV system.
The court heard the accused was on bail in relation to another alleged incident at the time and he has a drug and alcohol problem.
Judge Flann Brenan remanded him in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Thursday at 10:30am.
