Gardaí have appealed for public assistance into the investigation of a post office robbery in Cavan last Thursday.

A postmistress and her husband were held captive in their home in Virginia, Co Cavan by an armed gang before the robbery.

The woman and her husband were only released after she brought around €20,000 in cash from the post office in Oldcastle, Co Meath to a pre-arranged location outside Navan.

Gardaí say today they are particularly looking for any reports of suspicious activity around the Dean Hill area, halfway between Kentstown and Navan in Co Meath between 9am and 10am yesterday morning.
They are also focusing their attention on the Rathbeale Road in Swords.

This is the location where the postmistress' husband was left once she had dropped off the cash.

Gardaí say the raiders drove a van into the field, where it got stuck, forcing another vehicle to arrive to collect the raiders.
An appeal has been made to the public to contact them if they were driving by and witnessed this happening yesterday morning.

Gardaí say they have received great help from members of the public so far and are appealing for anyone who has information but has not yet been in touch to do so.

The investigation is being coordinated from the incident room at Kells Garda Station (046-9280820).
