Slane concert 2013, Eminem, Slane Castle, meath gardai, anti social behaviour

Slane Concert Eminem Review 2013

Slane Concert Arrests

There were over 60 arrests at the Eminem concert at Slane Castle, Co Meath, yesterday for offences related to public order, assault and drug possession.

Gardaí said, however, these figures were “very much in line” with the arrest numbers for previous events of this scale.

Based on what the force said were provisional figures, there were 22 arrests for public order offences, one for drink-driving, 35 for minor drug offences and five reported assaults.

Slane concert clean-up

These pictures show some of the alcohol bottles, cans, packaging thrown into one private garden outside Navan, a needle/syringe was also discarded. Residents along the Slane Road have cleared up most of the rubbish this morning and strong representations will be made to the Taxi Regulator, Navan Town and Meath County Council. Local residents are satisfied that all of this anti-social behaviour was due to the actions of Coach and Taxi companies, who took advantage of the fact that the majority of security measures were in and around Slane rather than closer to Navan.

Slane Concert weather

Torrential rain washed the hill of Slane today as concert goers flocked in their tens-of-thousands to Slane Castle in Slane Village.

Eminem Slane concert latest

Eminem has arrived in Slane Castle at 6.40pm after being escorted by Gardai in two blacked out vans as low cloud cover over Slane meant that it was impossible to fly into Slane by helicopter as is the normal mode of transport for the Slane concert superstars.

Slane Concert fans acting badly

While security was tight in and around Slane Village, several dozen coaches stopped on the Slane road outside Navan, and several hundred concert goers entered fields where crops are growing and as well as relieving themselves threw empty beer bottles and cans in their wake, young males and females in equal numbers showed total disregard for local residents and farmer’s crops almost ready for harvest.

Donie Quinn, Taxi, Trim, Meath

Donie Quinn, Taxi, Trim, Meath, stops and allows concert goers to urinate against a private garden wall, beer bottles and cans disgarded as concert goers get back on the Donie Quinn Taxi bound for Slane concert.

Slane concert complaint: One local resident said:

“We work hard along this stretch of road to keep the place tidy and presentable, it is unfortunate that coach drivers appear to know they would not be allowed to get away with this activity closer to Slane and so they are taking advantage of our area by dropping off hundreds of people, many of whom were drunk. Lord Henry Mount Charles may be protecting his own property but he is exposing our property to anti-social vandalism, these coach drivers should be banned from further Slane concerts, how do these people have public service licences when they are doing a public disservice”.

Slane Concert Security

The security operation at tonight's Eminem concert in Slane is likely to be one of the tightest ever seen at a music event in Ireland with 750 gardai on duty.

500 local stewards will be on hand too to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Coast guard teams will also help patrol the River Boyne alongside the venue at Slane Castle
Event organisers MCD say that ticket holders will be subjected to at least three searches at various points as they enter the venue.

Gardaí will be searching for alcohol, drugs and potential weapons.

Field of Barley ready for harvest used as toilet by Slane concert goers

They have also warned that there will be a major clampdown this year on anyone caught drinking in public areas or near the Co Meath village.

Slane Concert Gardai Operation

Bus operators bringing fans to the gig have been requested by gardaí not to allow fans to bring drink on board. Some Bus and taxi operators have totally ignored the Gardai, and while the Gardai have conducted a professional operation that cannot be said of some coach, taxi operators and concert goers who should hang their head with shame.

Sniffer dogs will also be used to detect illegal drugs and fans will face the prospect of being stopped and searched in a bid to prevent anyone bringing drink, drugs, or offensive weapons into the concert site.

Details of the tight security were revealed by gardaí, concert promoters MCD, and site owner Henry Mountcharles yesterday.

Almost 500 gardaí and 1,000 security personnel will be deployed to police the event. Supt Michael Devine said the Garda operation would be “quite stern and very much upfront”. He also said the curtailment on the amount of car parking facilities was aimed at encouraging people to use public transport.

Five men remain in Garda custody this morning in connection with the fatal shooting of a member of the Real IRA in a pub car park in Co Meath yesterday.

Peter Butterly (35), a father of three from Cortown, Togher, Dunleer, Co Louth, was shot dead in the car park of the Huntsman Inn in Gormanston at about 2.30pm while under surveillance by armed gardaí.

A postmortem is due to take place today at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Mr Butterly was due to stand trial next Wednesday on charges of membership of an illegal organisation, namely the Real IRA. He was free on bail.

He had gone to the car park for a meeting with others from the Real IRA, of which he was a regional commander.

However, the Real IRA has been feuding internally since the shooting dead of key figure Alan Ryan last September. Yesterday the group of men turned on Mr Butterly as part of that feud and shot him as he sat in his car in the pub car park. He staggered from the vehicle, then collapsed and died.

Members of the Emergency Response Unit were in the immediate vicinity, keeping Mr Butterly under surveillance because his life had been threatened, and also to gather information on whom he was meeting.

After he was shot, four suspects in their 20s fled in a car but were stopped by gardaí at the Balscadden Road not far from the pub. A fifth man, in his 40s, was arrested nearby. A handgun was recovered.

Paramilitary funeral
The suspects are from Coolock and parts of north Co Dublin. They knew Alan Ryan and some were among a group arrested in relation to the show of paramilitary strength at his funeral in Donaghmede, north Dublin, last September.

Mr Butterly’s remains were yesterday examined at the scene by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Khalid Jabbar.

Mr Butterly had been before the Special Criminal Court last March charged with Real IRA membership arising from his suspected transportation of bomb components in 2010.

The warrant used to gather evidence against him was ruled unconstitutional and charges were not pursued.

He was due to stand trial next Wednesday on a new charge of membership of an illegal organisation.

murder Garda Adrian Donohoe, oldcastle post office robbery, meath gardai

murder Garda Adrian Donohoe, oldcastle post office robbery, meath gardai
One week on from the cowardly murder of Garda Adrian Donohoe we have had yet another serious crime committed in our midst, the post-office in Oldcastle has been robbed after two people were held captive by criminals in Cavan. If you have any information about the cowardly murder of Garda Donohoe or this latest outrage in Oldcastle please contact An Garda Siochana.
The priest concelebrating the funeral Mass of murdered detective Adrian Donohoe has called for fresh thinking on policing resources so that people in rural communities do not sleep in their beds with fear and evil does not triumph over virtue.
In other remarks from the altar of St Joseph’s Redemptorist Church in Dundalk and addressed to those shielding or withholding information about the killers, Fr Michael Cusack said they had it in their power to give closure to the dead man’s widow Caroline, son Niall (6) and daughter Amy (7).
“If you have a semblance of goodness in you, for God’s sake turn these people in. If not, you are allowing Satan rule the lives of more people.”
Fr Cusack told some 4,000 mourners, 2,500 of them uniformed gardaí who stood for several hours in the street outside, that Det Garda Donohoe was a loving family man who gave himself to his wife and two young children, his job, the GAA and the community he lived in.
He said as a Redemptorist priest, he had always found himself unable to preach about fire and brimstone. “People say to me, 'Is there such a thing at all as fire and brimstone? Is there a battle between good and evil?' But it is perfectly clear evil does exist (in) the callous mowing down of an innocent human being.”
He added evil could “take hold of any heart, creeping in, slow acceptance, gentle movement until there is contamination all around”.
That evil had permeated all walks of life including politics, business, the Church and the media and was present in the murder of Det Garda Donohoe near his home in Lordship, Bellurgan, Co Louth, last Friday night.
Such evil was “clearly personified, almost satanic” in the dealing of drugs, yet when people were jailed they were still able to continue running their drugs businesses from behind bars. “It’s like Satan laughing at us,” he told those gathered, who included Minister for Justice Alan Shatter and Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan.
From a family of three generations of gardaí, Fr Cusack said when he went back to his native community in Galway, the one garda that had been based there for years had gone. Since his departure, two men in their 80s had had their “heads bashed in” at their homes, one of them left without hearing or a sense of smell as a result.
When he looked at the people in the area, he could see fear in the eyes of the elderly.
He added those who shielded the gang members who killed Det Garda Donohoe – during a botched armed robber at Lordship Credit Union last week – prolonged his family’s pain and denied them closure.
Also among the family party leading the mourners were Det Garda Donohoe’s parents Peggy and Hugh, parents-in-law Bridie and Stephen, sisters Mary and Anne, brothers Colm, Martin and Alan, brothers-in-law Derek, Kieran and John, sister-in-law Angela and a number of nephews and nieces. President Michael D Higgins was also present.
A number of Cabinet members attended the service, including Taoiseach Enda Kenny. PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott was also in attendance. Large numbers of officials from the Garda Representative Association, Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors and the Department of Justice as well as Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieut Gen Sean McCann and senior Army officers all attended to pay their respects.
Mr Callinan addressed mourners, saying the murdered man was a not only a garda but a community leader and loving husband and father who would never be forgotten. “Adrian, Detective Garda Donohoe, husband, father, son, brother, colleague, community leader, GAA man, friend, we will never ever forget you” he told the congregation. The force would do all it could to bring the killers to justice.
His brother Colm Donohoe said the family was devastated by “senseless and tragic loss” and all the occasions his brother would miss with his children growing up. They took some comfort that he lived life to the fullest “always with a smile on his face”, he said.
President Higgins and his wife Sabina expressed condolences with the family "in the name of all citizens of the State", Fr Cusack said.
Among the gifts offered during the Mass in memory of the detective were a football and a jersey, his Garda cap and badge, a family photograph and a model of a Massey Ferguson tractor which mourners were told he had always wanted.
The funeral Mass began just after 1pm and finished shortly after 2.30pm, with burial afterwards at Lordship Cemetery.
Members of the St Patrick’s GAA club, where Det Garda Donohoe had been active since settling in the area after moving from his native Co Cavan to begin his Garda career, also played a key role in today’s ceremonies.
Det Garda Donohoe had been a member of the force for two decades and had spent most of his career in Dundalk station, where he was a popular colleague and regarded as a very proactive member of the force in tackling local crime.
His widow Caroline is also a member of the Garda based in Dundalk, while her twin brother is a garda in Limerick. The dead man’s two brothers are also members of the force, based in Navan, Co Meath and Swords, Co Dublin.
Det Garda Donohoe was shot dead during an armed robbery at Lordship Credit Union at 9.30pm last Friday. He was due to provide an escort into Dundalk for a consignment of cash with his colleague Det Garda Joe Ryan.
However, when they arrived at the car park, five raiders were waiting. One of the raiders drove the gang’s car across the entrance of the credit union car park to block in the detectives’ car.
When Det Garda Donohoe was stepping out of his vehicle to investigate, one of the gang members opened fire with a shotgun, fatally wounding him in the head.
The investigation into the murder is continuing, with gardaí of the view that those behind the attack live in both the local north Louth area and just across the Border in south Armagh.
